Sex chromosome shocker: The 'female' X a key contributor to sperm production (EurekAlert, 21 July 2013)

A study in Nature Genetics uses single-haplotype iterative mapping and sequencing to inform the reference sequence for the human X chromosome, and compares the newly identified features with the mouse X chromosome. The authors report the acquisition of a number of new genes during human evolution, including some that are expressed almost exclusively in testicular germ cells.
