Diabetes breakthrough: insulin-producing cells formed using malaria drugs

A team of researchers from Austria examined the role of a variety of approved drugs on alpha and beta cell transformation. They found that artemisinins – a group of drugs commonly used to treat malaria – could induce transformation of alpha cells into beta cells. Their findings were published in the journal Cell.
