According to a study published in The BMJ, women diagnosed with perinatal depression are twice as likely to die prematurely – including by suicide – than women who were unaffected by perinatal depression. This study links to research from MBRRACE-UK which has seen a rise in maternal death rates which are at the highest in 10 years. Both studies show an increased need for mental health care for new mothers.
