Researched published in the American Journal of Human Genetics suggests that using a part of a human egg that does not go on to become an embryo - the polar body - in genetic tests may not allow for an adequately sensitive test for mitochondrial diseases. The authors add that all polar bodies that were mutation-free were associated with eggs that were mutation-free.
