Zebrafish as an innovative model for neuroendocrine tumours (Endocrine-Related Cancer, 29 November 2013)

06 Jan 2014

There are a limited number of animal models available for neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). A number of these have limitations and also the lacks of available models are related to rarity and heterogeneity of this group of cancers. This article is a comprehensive review detailing the zebrafish as a model in cancer research including NETs.

The zebrafish does not have organs like lungs or the prostate; however, they can spontaneously develop almost any type of tumour. A number of melanoma zebrafish models have been developed and thought to have some useful characteristics. The pathways and feedback loops of the endocrine system are thought to be conserved from the zebrafish to human. A number of promising endocrine models have been developed in zebrafish.
