Welcome to your new Executive Committee members

Two new Executive Committee members were elected by an online vote earlier this year and they officially took office at the Annual General Meeting held online on 26 May 2020. 

Mirjam Christ-Crain

Mirjam Christ-Crain is full Professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Basel and the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland. She studied medicine in Basel and Vienna and did her MD in the year 2000 at the University of Basel and her PhD in 2007 at the University of London, followed by her habilitation at the University of Basel in 2007. From 2009 to 2015 she had a research professorship of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Her main research interest is on vasopressin-dependent disorders of fluid homeostasis, i.e. diabetes insipidus and hyponatremia. She authored and co-authored more than 200 publications including high-ranked publications in the New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet and received several honours and awards for her research, most recently the European Journal of Endocrinology Award 2019. Since 2013 she is Deputy Chief at the Clinic for Endocrinology, University Hospital Basel and since 2014 she is Head of the Department of Clinical Research at the University of Basel.

In her election statement, Mirjam said “My relationship with the ESE is long-standing. I am an active member of the society since many years with a strong identification with the ESE. I have long-term experience in being a member of the Executive Committee of our national (Swiss) society, where I was responsible for different tasks, political and scientific, from 2009 to 2019. I have a strong clinical and scientific interest and track record as researcher in diverse endocrine diseases, i.e. neuroendocrinology and pituitary, but also endocrinology of critical illness. An utmost concern of mine is the promotion of young colleagues. In this regard, I have built up a new PhD track “clinical research” at our University of Basel, which by now is the fastest growing PhD track at our University. I am serving in several national research boards to promote young and established researchers, among others the Swiss National Science Foundation, which is the main research Foundation in Switzerland. 

As a member of the ESE Executive Committee, I would offer my full commitment, motivation and enthusiasm to the continuous discussion and improvement of education, research and innovation in Endocrinology in Europe and would be committed to be an ambassador for the ESE in different countries.

Djuro Macut

Djuro Macut, MD, PhD is Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia. He graduated and obtained a PhD degree at the same institution. Dr Macut was on clinical attachment programs at the University Hospitals in Bologna, Uppsala and Oxford, and completed a postgraduate program in Reproductive Medicine from the University of Geneva and World Health Organization. Dr Macut is Head of Department and Deputy Director, Clinic of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Clinical Center of Serbia. 

Djuro served as Organising Committee member and Scientific Committee chair of the Serbian National Congress of Endocrinology. He is member of the ESE Congress Committee, ESE Council of Affiliated Societies (ECAS) representative to the ESE Executive Committee and served as POC member for ECE 2017 (Lisbon) and ECE 2018 (Barcelona). 

Djuro organised International Symposiums on Advances in PCOS and Women’s Health and Belgrade Masterclass in Clinical Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. His fields of interest are reproductive endocrinology, metabolic endocrinology and neuroendocrine tumours. He is author in over 90 original articles and reviews published in peer reviewed journals, author of book chapters including co-editorship of the book on PCOS from the Karger’s series Frontiers of Hormone Research. He was invited speaker on International Congresses and Postgraduate Courses. Djuro is Associate Editor of Hormones and Editorial board member of Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, Journal of the Endocrine Society (2017-2019) and Endocrine and serves as reviewer for numerous international journals. 

In his election statement, Djuro said “Endocrinology is integrating with related areas of medicine aiming for better understanding and management of both chronic and rare diseases, as well how to deliver personalized treatments to the patients. Therefore, ESE's mission as the leading learning society, is in postgraduate education of endocrinologists and related specialties, as well to enhance research within focus areas of endocrinology”.

Djuro Macut will also remain as the ECAS representative until the new representative is elected (by the National Affiliated Members of ESE) until the Autumn 2020.
