Welcome to Copenhagen (København)!

18 Apr 2013

With the 15th European Congress of Endocrinology in Copenhagen just a week away, for some this will be your first visit to the Danish capital. So we thought we’d take this opportunity to give you a delegate’s overview of what you can expect during your stay in this fair city.

Widely considered one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan city and wonderfully described by entertainer Danny Kaye as the most wonderful city in Scandinavia, Copenhagen is unquestionably the jewel in the Nordic crown. And now it seems that the rest of the world is finally waking up to all it has to offer – a few days spent here and you will see there is more to Copenhagen than what you will have seen on the likes of The Killing and Borgen.

Despite Denmark being a relatively small country, with a population of just 5½ million people, its capital more than packs an impressive and a remarkably hefty punch compared to many of its European rivals. Here are 5 things you probably didn’t know about Denmark’s capital city:

1. Monocle magazine described Copenhagen as the world’s best city to live, not to mention being the greenest city in Europe.

2. Copenhageners are the happiest people in Europe, according to a recent survey by Forbes magazine.

3. Notable Copenhageners from history include author Karen Blixen, physicist Niels Bohr, developer of bacterial Gram staining Hans Christian Gram, existentialist philosopher Søren A. Kierkegaard and abstract artist and CoBrA member Carl-Henning Pedersen.

4. Stroget, in the city centre, is Europe’s longest pedestrian street and is lined with a glittering array of exclusive boutiques.

5. According to the Visit Copenhagen website, over a third of all Copenhageners commute by bicycle.

We are delighted to be hosting this year’s conference in Copenhagen and we hope that you will find time to enjoy this impressive city during your stay.

See you soon!
