Vacancy for ESPE Tutor, Nairobi, Kenya

18 Nov 2011

From 2012, ESPE's developing countries' programme, is supporting two Paediatric Endocrine Training Centres for Africa (PETCA). One centre in Nairobi, Kenya has been funded by an extension of the original World Development Foundation (WDF) grant and the other (also funded by the WDF) is a new development starting in spring 2012 led by our Nigerian colleagues in Lagos. Each centre will be supported for a period of two weeks by visiting clinical tutors from the membership of both ESPE and the Internaional Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes - ISPAD (approximately every other month) with local graduates from the first PETCA in Nairobi providing full time support between the ESPE/ISPAD tutor visits.

We therefore have three to four vacancies each year for ESPE tutors to visit the PETCAs in Nairobi and Lagos for two weeks from 2012-2014 (with one slot in Nairobi available starting in January 2012). These tutors will support the trainees through a combination of didactic training tutorials and supervision of clinical training in local hospital outpatient departments.

The programme and ESPE will cover second class air fares to Africa and a modest honorarium with secure accommodation provided on the hospital campuses where the training facilities are based. This represents a fantastic opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to this important initiative to support the training and development of services for children with endocrine disorders in sub-Saharan Africa and we would warmly welcome expressions of interest from colleagues interested in attending.

Please could interested colleagues contact Professor John W Gregory at [email protected] with some idea of their availability in 2012-2014. Feedback from previous tutors has suggested that these visits provide many rewarding personal and clinical experiences.
