Distinguishing between corticotropin (ACTH)-producing pituitary adenoma (Cushing disease) and occult ectopic ACTH syndrome (EAS) can be problematic.
Guo et al. hypothesised that dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) could prove to be useful in the differentiation of different subtypes of adenomas with different vascular characteristics and conducted a retrospective pilot study
Their study shows that enhancement parameters in DMRI can help distinguishing ACTH producing from nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas, which could be useful in the differential diagnosis between ACTH-producing pituitary adenomas and ectopic ACTH syndrome complicated with nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma.
