TMEFF2 is a transmembrane protein of unknown function, predominantly expressed in the brain and prostate, and has been implicated in cell signaling, neuronal cell survival and tumor suppression. Labeur and colleagues found that expression of TMEFF2 in pituitary corticotrope cells inhibits the effects of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), that TMEFF2 expression is reduced in human Cushing's adenoma, and that TMEFF2 overexpression decreased corticotrope cell proliferation. This indicates that TMEFF2 is a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of corticotrope tumors.
