Thyrotropin and metformin

Recent small studies have reported a lowered serum thyrotropin level in type 2 diabetics with primary hypothyroidism when treated with metformin. To date, no large studies have assessed the relationship between metformin and thyroid function. Díez and Inglesias conduced a large study in over 800 type 2 diabetics with normal thyroid function, finding no association between metformin and thyrotropin levels in diabetics with normal thyroid function.
