TERT mutations in thyroid cancers

08 Aug 2013

Recent studies which discovered telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene promoter mutations in human melanomas represent a novel genetic mechanism in human tumorigenesis. Liu and colleagues identified, for the first time, common TERT promoter mutations in thyroid cancers, which are particularly prevalent in aggressive subtypes. The discovery of this novel genetic background in thyroid cancers opens exciting new opportunities for biological and clinical research.
