Bergmann and colleagues investigated whether patients with two chronic diseases (diabetes and ischemic heart disease (IHD)) have a higher degree of chronic stress than patients with IHD alone, and whether patients with two chronic diseases have higher scores in specific elements of the chronic stress concept. They found that patients with both diabetes and IHD had a higher chronic stress score in some questionnaires, but not others. They conclude that combined chronic disease is associated with increased depressive symptoms, and lower physical and mental QoL. This should be recognized in the management of patients with several chronic diseases.
