Specialist Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology with Community Focus

There is an exciting new position for a Specialist Physician in Endocrinology and Diabetes to join the Department of Medicine of the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, New Zealand. This is a new post created to meet our growing demand for diabetes and endocrinology services. The successful applicant will join our current physician in diabetes in endocrinology and work with a team of 17 other Specialist Physicians to provide a comprehensive range of community and hospital services to a population of 150,000 people. S/he will have a broad range of skills in Diabetes and Endocrinology, including the ability and willingness to work as part of multidisciplinary teams within primary and secondary services. The successful applicant should have a FRACP (or equivalent) with specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology and be registered (or registerable) as a specialist with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Specialist services are based at the Hawke’s Bay Hospital in Hastings which provides all acute specialist services for the region. This facility has 400 inpatient beds and, all major specialties are well represented including intensive care and an excellent organ imaging department with on-site CT scanning, MRI, ultrasound and nuclear medicine facilities. Duties will include provision of specialist services for people with diabetes, supporting primary care practitioners and multidisciplinary teams working with people with diabetes and assisting with developing and evaluating models of care that support the Ministry of Health’s services to address inequalities. The successful applicant would also have an active role in student and junior doctor teaching programmes. Hawke’s Bay is on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The region’s population of 150,000 is spread between the twin cities of Hastings and Napier, and the surrounding countryside. Hawke’s Bay is famous for a warm and sunny climate, fine wine and Art Deco architecture. There are excellent schools, a wide range of sporting and leisure opportunities and the central North Island ski fields are an easy drive away.
