Side population in pituitary tumours

29 Jul 2015

Pituitary adenomas cause significant endocrine and mass-related morbidity. Little is known about the mechanisms that underlie pituitary tumour pathogenesis. Mertens and colleagues searched for a side population (SP) in pituitary tumours which represent cells with high efflux capacity and potentially enriched for tumour stem cells (TSCs). They detected a SP in pituitary tumours and identified TSC-associated characteristics, which adds new elements to the unravelling of pituitary tumour pathogenesis and may lead to the identification of new therapeutic targets.
