Aldosterone (Ald) secreted by the adrenal cortex is now thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular events and metabolic syndrome (MS). However, the underlying mechanisms have not been clarified in detail. Apelin has been proposed as a novel beneficial adipokine related to insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk factors, hypertension, and obesity.
Jiang et al conducted a study to explore the regulatory effects of Ald on apelin expression and secretion and the underlying mechanisms in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.
Their study for the first time produces evidence that Ald is a negative regulator of apelin production in adipocytes, which strengthens the crosstalk between adipose tissue and the adrenal cortex. These findings provide novel insights into the effects of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid hormones in the modulation of adipose tissue physiopathology.
