Progressive decline of residual follicle pool

11 Sept 2012

Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) affects approximately 1% of women below the age of 40 years, and is associated with hypoestrogenism and infertility. In a subset of POI patients, the disease is caused an autoimmune response against the ovary. In this study, Falorni and colleagues demonstrate that most autoimmune POI patients present with a preserved pool of ovarian follicles, which is progressively lost as the disease progresses. This suggests that immunomodulatory treatment could benefit these patients. Falorni et al. (2012) Clinical Endocrinology 77 453–458.
