Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the functioning of the endocrine system. They include organochlorines, which are persistent pollutants that bind to steroid hormone receptors and are capable of inducing reproductive, neurological and behavioural disorders. This research project aims to evaluate the effect of endocrine disruptors in a cohort of military personnel sent on missions abroad in areas in which exposure to these chemicals is possible. The study will enable evaluation of their effect on the endocrine function and metabolic health of these personnel and establish the presence of any androgen receptor polymorphisms that might modulate endocrine response to these disruptors.
