PhD Studentship, University of Aberdeen - Modeling and Mechanisms of Binge Eating and Diet-induced Obesity

31 Mar 2009

Via findaphd.com. The project is a collaboration between obesity researchers at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition & Health, University of Aberdeen and Astra Zeneca. It will enable the successful student to conduct research in these complementary environments. The student will establish a laboratory rodent model of meal eating and periodic bingeing on palatable food that mimics the types of human eating behaviour that contribute to over-consumption of calories and obesity. The mechanisms driving meal feeding and bingeing will be investigated using state-of-the-art behavioural and molecular approaches with the aim of identifying the critical hormonal cues and brain signaling systems responsible. Techniques will include behavioural and body composition analysis, immunoassay, in situ hybridisation, laser capture microdissection and microarray, giving the student the opportunity to acquire expertise in a broad spectrum of contemporary methodologies. In addition, pharmacological blockade of identified regulatory mechanisms will be investigated during placements within the laboratories of the industrial partner. Further details can be found at the website below; the closing date for applications is 30 April 2009.
