PhD studentship, University of Aberdeen

19 Nov 2012

Via www.findaphd.com. A PhD studentship entitled 'A new function for the pineal gland in the brain and control of daily melatonin rhythm' is available at the University of Aberdeen. The project will focus around retinoic acid, a powerful factor that controls brain gene expression, produced by the pineal gland.

The project will involve a range of methods including organotypic culture of brain, biochemical study of the metabolic pathways of retinoic acid and melatonin synthesis, analysis of transgenic mice, as well as assays for control of gene expression. The results will have consequences ranging from understanding how the pineal gland influences the rhythms of the brain to the potential of retinoic acid and melatonin to protect the brain from neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
