Average life-expectancy in European men remains 5-6 years shorter than that of women. The School of Translational Medicine at the University of Manchester is offering a PhD studentship designed to investigate the potential neuroendocrine mechanisms behind this discrepancy. By looking at how levels of various anabolic hormones change with age, the project hopes to describe an 'aging phenotype' in man, and examine how far the endocrine system exerts its influence on ageing.
