Nicotine effects during lactation

The public are well aware of the dangers of smoking whilst pregnant and indeed it has been established that women quit smoking during pregnancy. However little is known about the maintenance of the cessation and relapse during lactation.

Oliviera et al. evaluated the short-term consequences of maternal nicotine exposure on the hormonal, biochemical and nutritional profiles of mothers and pups during lactation and show that nicotine affects these profiles deleteriously. The data presented in this study expand the literature by addressing an exposure period not typically studied in cigarette or nicotine toxicology studies. Oliviera et al.
