The European Union is due to discuss the EU research budget for 2014-2020 in a summit meeting of the Heads of State or Government and Presidents taking place on 22-23 November. Due to the current economic climate, several countries are demanding cuts to the total EU budget, meaning that research will need to compete for funding with other policy priorities. There are concerns that the discussions may lead to a significant cut to the science budget.

This petition complements an Open Letter from 42 Nobel Laureates and 5 Field Medallists to EU Heads of States and Governments highlighting their grave concerns of what the consequences might be of cuts to the research budget. You can read a copy of the letter here. The petition is coordinated by the Initiative for Science in Europe.
