New biography by the Royal College of Physicians - <i>Hoffenberg - physician and humanitarian</i>

Raymond (Bill) Hoffenberg trained and practised as a physician in South Africa - the country of his birth - until he was banned for his anti-apartheid activities. Moving to the UK, his work on the standards of medical practice led to his becoming president of the Royal College of Physicians of London from 1983-1989, where he spoke out against NHS reforms proposed under the Thatcher government. His research into the thyroid led to him also being elected president of the International Society of Endocrinology. He died on 22 April 2007, aged 84.
