The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reductions of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) has set up a working group to establish the impact of rodent age on study outcome to improve experimental design and reduce animal use where possible. There is evidence that age can impact the outcome of experiments and also translation of findings to humans. It has also been shown that age is not often reported in peer-reviewed journals which may make it difficult to interpret published findings.
As part of this initiative we are gathering information on the age of rodents used across the biological research community and the reasoning for the choice of age. Any information that is provided will be treated in confidence and will only be reported in aggregate. The information will be used to determine best practice and develop guidelines and recommendations on study design.
