Natural history of subclinical hyperthyroidism

Subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) is characterised by low levels of serum thyrotropin (TSH) with normal triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels. Treating SCH risks progression to overt hyperthyroidism and the true repercussions of treating endogenous SCH in elderly patients with SCH are unclear.
