Making the most of ECE 2017 - Tips from EYES' Luis Cardoso

27 Apr 2017

Luis Cardoso is a Clinical Endocrinologist at the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra and at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. His primary areas of interest are pituitary and parathyroid tumours. He is a member of the Portuguese Young Endocrinologists’ Forum (FInE) and of the European Young Endocrine Scientists (EYES). In this post, Luis discusses his plan and highlights for ECE 2017.

How will you make the most of the congress?

Attending the European Congress of Endocrinology (ECE) is one of the best things you can do for your career. It is a unique opportunity for learning the latest findings in endocrinology and I always look over the schedule in advance to make sure I identify all can’t-miss talks in my field. I also try to go outside my area of interest and acquire new skills by attending a wide range of talks. It really is a balancing act.

What makes ECE special?

The scientific quality combined with an informal environment make ECE a really special conference, where networking, sharing your research, and interacting with senior researchers is really easy. In particular, for young career endocrinologists it offers the opportunity to build a scientific network, which will yield benefits in the form of scientific collaborations and new friendships. Furthermore, young researchers have an active role during the ECE and we are invited to participate in the European Young Endocrine Scientists (EYES) symposium and in the amazing EYES social event.

What sessions are you looking forward to?

I will certainly not miss the EYES symposium: Turn your face to the sunshine! On Sunday, 21 May (Symposium 5), three extraordinary young endocrinologists will shine in sunny Lisbon: Tim Korevaar on thyroid function and infant neurodevelopment; Vickie Braithwaite on vitamin D and rickets; and Liubov Matchekhina on Cushing’s disease, carbohydrate metabolism and incretins.

And from the sunny city of Lisbon, we would like to invite you to the 5th EYES Meeting, that will be held 8-10 September in the amazing city of Porto!
