Prostate cancer development and progression is associated with chronic inflammation. The cytokine interleukin 6 (IL6) is implicated in many cancers, including prostate cancer. Erb and colleagues identified novel IL6 pathways in two prostate cancer cell lines, finding that interferon regulatory factor 9 (IRF9) mRNA and protein is upregulated by IL6. IRF9 is implicated in tumour proliferation and drug resistance in prostate cancer.
