International Thyroid Awareness Week: What is ECE bringing you?

25 May 2016

To support International Thyroid Awareness Week we have pulled out a selection of thyroid-related content from the upcoming conference in Munich: what better place to get the latest thyroid research and clinical news than at ECE 2016?

Things start early on Saturday, with a Thyroid Ultrasound Pre Congress Course at 10.00, where delegates can learn more about the diagnosis of thyroid disorders using ultrasound.

Sunday then really starts the thyroid focus, with an 08:15 Meet the Expert session, discussing difficult thyroid cases from scientists in the UK and Italy. At 10.30, Symposium 1 begins, focusing on the thyroid and pregnancy. This is chaired by Tim Korevaar from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Daniel Glinoer, Head of the Thyroid Investigation Clinic at the University Hospital Sainte Pierre in Brussels. Talks included will discuss LT4 therapy and how to treat hyperthyroidism during pregnancy.

At 11.30 on Sunday make your way to Symposium 4, where Jose Manuel Fernandez-Real from the Biomedical Research Institute of Girona, Spain, discusses the link between hypothyroidism and obesity. Tim Korevaar, the chair of Symposium 1, then presents his own research abstract at 12.15, in which he discusses an additional hormone measurement capable of revealing women at risk of hyperthyroidism-related preeclampsia.

Moving on to Monday, Symposium 11 begins at 10.30 with a focus on new developments in subclinical thyroid disease. This is chaired by Laura Fugazzola from the Milan Centre for Thyroid Disease, and Christine Spitzweg from the University of Munich. The talks focus on thyroid disease and aging, and what we have learnt about the clinical outcomes of thyroid disease from large population analyses.

At 15.30 on Monday Symposium 16 will complete your thyroid quota for the day, addressing thyroid nodules, the natural history of the disease, its molecular diagnosis and its occurrence in children. This is chaired by Paulo Vitti from the University of Pisa, and Ludwig Schaaf from Munich Municipal Hospital.

Moving onto Tuesday – the final day of ECE 2016 – the thyroid discussion begins early with an update from Pacini Furio of the University of Sienna on what’s new in thyroid cancer guidelines. Following a paper in JAMA Oncology in April, the news has been widely reported that a prevalent type of thyroid cancer known as encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma will be reclassified to remove the word ‘carcinoma’ from the medical name. We look forward to other such related updates from Furio during his talk.

Finally, the last thyroid-focused symposium at ECE begins at 10.00 with an update on hyperparathyroidism, chaired by Agnes Lingart from the Department of paediatric Endocrinology, GHU Paris, and Refik Tanokol from Istanbul University.

The ECE 2016 programme is so full of talks and discussions that is isn’t possible for us to mention every thyroid-related talk – so, with Thyroid Awareness Week in mind, be sure to explore while you’re there.
