Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a key regulator of glucose and lipid metabolism, and has been implicated in conditions associated with insulin resistance, including sepsis. This report by Gariani and colleagues is the first to demonstrate that patients with sepsis have significantly elevated FGF21 plasma levels. In doing so, they have identified a potential new biomarker and therapeutic target.
