A study presented in Mayo Clinic Proceedings has suggested that high consumption of salt may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 39%. Increased salt in meals was also correlated with a higher BMI; this may be because salt consumption leads to increased portion sizes, which increases the likelihood of developing obesity and diabetes.
