Growth hormone and memory in rats

08 Jan 2013

Growth hormone (GH) is a polypeptide produced in the somatotrophs of the anterior pituitary. GH has previously been shown to promote cognitive functions in GH-deficient rodents. Grönbladh et al. conducted a study to determine the effects of GH on spatial learning and memory in rats pretreated with anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). In general, the rats treated with AAS alone did not exhibit any pronounced alterations in memory function compared to controls. However, treatment with GH improved spatial memory in intact rats.
