A lot of scientific and media interest followed a report that growth hormone (GH) deficiency may protect against the development of diabetes mellitus. The main limitation of said study was the reliance on self-reporting for diabetes. Vicente and colleagues used fasting glucose and the oral glucose tolerance test in a cohort of untreated isolated GH deficient individuals to demonstrate that GH deficiency is associated with increased insulin sensitivity, impaired β-cell function and does not protect against diabetes.
