Fellowship in angioedema attacks: triggers and hormonal influences, University of Rome, Italy

23 Oct 2012

Via http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess. A fellowship to study the role of sex hormones in hereditary angioedema is available at the University of Rome, Italy.

The fluctuations of sex hormone concentrations at the beginning of adolescence, in the perimenopausal period, and during pregnancy or oral contraceptive use can precipitate HAE attacks. Edematous attacks usually disappear after the onset of menopause. This project will involve measuring serum concentrations of luteinising hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, progesterone, oestradiol, testosterone, prolactin, and sex-hormone binding globulin in patients with HAE. A questionnaire will be used to explore the medical history of adult patients to characterise the evolution and properties of attacks.
