European Research Area Chairs

The European Commission has launched a pilot scheme designed to improve participation in the FP7 funding programme by enabling research institutions to develop their potential for research excellence.

Institutions are invited to submit proposals that detail organisational changes inspired by European Research Area (ERA) best practice principles to become more open, attractive and competitive. The successful institutions will be awarded a maximum EU contribution of €2.4 million and will appoint an ERA Chair with a track record in scientific excellence who will be responsible for the proposed changes. The scheme aims to bridge the research and innovation gap and to enable institutions from low performing Member States and regions to develop, in a particular field, the level of excellence required to compete internationally and effectively widen participation.
