Effect of fasting salivary insulin

05 Sept 2012

Saliva sampling is an attractive tool for the monitoring of endocrine function: in contrast to serum sampling, it is non-invasive, cheap and does not require highly trained personnel. In this preliminary study, Fabre and colleagues demonstrate salivary and serum insulin correlation, and favourable analytical characteristics in 277 paediatric subjects. The method could develop into a useful clinical tool, given the increased incidence of obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in the paediatric population. Fabre et al.
