Dysfunction of the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Arnetz and colleagues investigated the impact of T2D and gender on the HPA axis. They found that males with T2D and good metabolic control had increased adrenal reactivity to ACTH compared with healthy controls. This resulted in the eradication of gender differences seen in healthy subjects. Meanwhile, IGF1 was unaffected.
