The post is funded following the introduction of the national Best Practice Tariff enabling expansion of the Multi Disciplinary Diabetes Team. This is a full-time post mainly designed to provide intensified diabetes management for children with type 1 diabetes, with increased consultant-lead care, and designated insulin pump clinics. One third of the post is designed to deliver tertiary endocrine services. There are 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PA’s and 2.5 supporting professional activities (SPA). They are looking to employ a motivated, tertiary trained paediatric endocrinologist with a significant interest in diabetes who will work with the existing team and develop a leadership role for the type 2 diabetes and Prader Willi syndrome service at BCH. Previous research experience is desirable. There is a 1:6 on call commitment for endocrinology & diabetes.
The Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Service currently sees 2,500 endocrine outpatients and 1,400 diabetes outpatients per year. This service also provides a number of multidisciplinary, specialist endocrine and diabetes clinics and also out-reach clinics in a number of district general hospitals within the West Midlands. It is hoped that the post holder will extend and lead the implementation of intensive insulin management to make Birmingham a leading UK centre for the management of diabetes.
