To get a better understanding of 'real-world' cortisol interpretations, Birmingham Quality are circulating a survey to be completed by clinical biochemistry colleagues and clinicians/advanced nurse practitioners.
The variability of cortisol cut-off values causes challenges if patients are reviewed by different centres. In collaboration with UK NEQAS, Birmingham Quality are also circulating samples of cortisol nationally for analysis by local methods in respective laboratories, which will then be compared to mass spectrometry analysis. The aim of this project is to find a way of unifying the reporting process and to help better understand the methodology used, locally adopted cut-offs and the decisions you make based on the results.
Birmingham Quality will share the outcomes widely once available.
