Competencies added to Society for Endocrinology Competency Framework for Adult Endocrine Nursing

10 Feb 2015

An updated Competency Framework for adult endocrine nursing has been developed to standardise and improve the quality of care for patients with hormone related diseases. The framework is published this week in the journal Endocrine Connections and builds upon the original Competency Framework for Adult Endocrine Nursing which was published by the Society for Endocrinology in 2013.

This document is the product of extensive collaboration between nurses working in adult endocrinology. The competencies are easily transferable and should help nurses working both at home and abroad to develop as professional practitioners and enhance the clinical care that adults with endocrine disorders receive worldwide.

The four new competencies include: benign adrenal tumours, hypo- and hyperparathyroidism, osteoporosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Lisa Shepherd, co-author of the Competency Framework and Chair of the Society for Endocrinology Nurse Committee, said:

“The aim of the framework is to provide a tool that allows nurses working in adult endocrinology to develop from a novice to an expert practitioner. It allows for the advancement of nurses by identifying their current level of practice and development of personal and educational needs. The Competency Framework also benefits patients and employers by providing high standards of care, assisting with organisational planning and increasing the effectiveness of service provision.”

“The Competency Framework provides a means of achieving and maintaining consistently high standards of equitable care.”

The Competency Framework is available online of in full PDF format in the journal Endocrine Connections.
