Applications are invited for a 1 year post within the Institute of Cellular Medicine at Newcastle University. There may be a potential for extension to 2 years. The successful candidate will join a team of basic and clinician scientists working at the leading edge of translational research for type 1 diabetes.
The core project is based around an international Phase 3 RCT to determine the therapeutic potential of the novel anti-inflammatory agent reparixin to deliver sustainable insulin independence after a single islet infusion. The wider goal is to determine whether, in transplant recipients with and without adjuvant reparixin therapy, long term outcome can be predicted by a combination of novel inflammatory biomarkers and standardised metabolic testing in the early post-transplant period.
The post will provide experience and training in experimental medicine in addition to insulin pump therapy, real time continuous glucose monitoring, transplant management and islet quality assessment.
Applicants should be medically qualified and highly motivated to undertake a year or more focusing on type 1 diabetes research and/or supplementary more clinically oriented experience in complex type 1 diabetes management. Specific research goals and clinical commitments will be agreed with the successful candidate. Commitment to a higher MD / PhD degree (if not previously attained) and competing for external named Fellowships will be strongly supported but is not mandatory.
The deadline for applications is 17 February 2014. For further information please visit the job advert.
