Unger
et al. describe an ambitious approach to discover radiation-induced oncogenic rearrangements in breast cancer cell lines. Several chromosomal translocations were identified and mapped, and the aberrant expression of genes participating in the rearrangements was demonstrated. Although the functional consequence of these rearrangements on mammary cell tumorigenesis needs further study, this is a valuable approach to scan the genome for potentially novel radiation-induced fusion genes.
