An unusual cause of bilateral adrenal gland haemorrhage

29 Sept 2014

Bilateral adrenal gland haemorrhage (BAH) is a rare complication of bacterial sepsis (Waterhouse–Friderichsen syndrome).

Gowda et al. report a case of BAH that occurred three days after percutaneous drainage of amoebic liver abscess. Further investigation suggested anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome (APLS), which is a rare cause of BAH. This case emphasises the need for strong clinical suspicion for diagnosing BAH, a rare but life-threatening condition, and its association with amoebic liver abscess and APLS.
